Working from home is not for me

We are in lockdown. I think most of the world is in lockdown.
I am an essential worker so the company that I'm working at is still operating.

Most people would have already either started working from home or just not working at all.

At first, for me, I could still go into office.
However, as the lockdown goes on, my boss felt bad for me and tried to arrange me to work from home.

But unfortunately, my work requires system access and hence, that can only be accessed in office.

So I can't work from home completely.

In the end, my boss arranged for me to be on rotation. One day, I work from home and the other day, I work from office.

I only started working from home recently.

To be honest, maybe I'm someone who requires the routine and this whole rotation thing is making me confused.

Or maybe, I haven't been working from home long enough to get used to this yet.

But honestly, so far, I'll say, working from home is not for me.

I know alot of people would prefer working from home but really not for me.

Why is it not for me?

I think for me, I have good work life balance.
Even before this lockdown, I'm someone who will forget all about work the moment I leave the office doors.

I think what's important is that territory marking.
The office represent work.
Home represent my personal life.
Generally, I don't mix the two of that.

I don't bring work home. (More like I can't. But I don't mind)

I usually nap on the train on the way to the office and that gives me time to awaken my mind.
In the office, just being in that space and doing things such as switching on the laptop, helps to put me in the focus mode for work.

But at home, the lines are blurred.
Not only that, the space at home is shared with family members.

My work space is at living room because that's the only place that has a desk with good internet connection and reasonable air ventilation.
Yes, the living room.

That's where my family members are at.
The space is shared.

I know you share the office space with colleagues.
But I supposed with colleagues, you know everyone is busy with their own work and in that sense, there's that privacy.
My office has partition so everyone has their own work spaces so it's also fairly private.

But at home, my family members can see what I do.
Not that it matters.

In the beginning, my family members did pester me, making me do chores and what not.
But now, they now realise that I am working and I don't have time for them unless I'm on break or I get off work.
So there's a blur between boundaries sometimes. But maybe because it was not established yet.

But for some reason, it's also just harder for me to focus.
I can't seem to get into the focus mode that I need to.
And maybe because I'm at home, my brain just tends to go to relax mode instead.

But then again, maybe it's my nature of work.
Due to having no system access at home, I'm just literally recording work that I need to do the next day and trying to clarify things with clients.
So maybe I'm just getting stressed out from the things that are slowly piling up for me to do.

But either way, I definitely prefer working in the office.

I'm not saying the office is superior. But I'm just saying it's not for me.

And the sometimes office culture is bullshit too.

As I said before, I do believe in work life balance. So if a company makes someone stays back despite finishing their work because it's "culture", that's just total nonsense to me.

Because when you finished your work, I don't think you owe the company anymore time.

And also, I believe in a person's wellbeing being first priority too. So if you work a job that taking a toll on your mental and physical health, I don't think that's good either. Because at the end of the day, we are humans.

Anyhow, I hope everyone out there do take care.

I really do wish this will all be over soon but that's unlikely.
